I’ve been seeing a lot of hate lately on social media in Lebanon.
If you go on Facebook and read people’s comments below political or revolution-related videos and statuses, you will see an unacceptably high and ugly amount of hate. You will see Lebanese people cursing fellow Lebanese people in defense of a political figure or political party, or in defense of the revolution. You will see Lebanese citizens wishing death to all other Lebanese citizens who have a different point of view. It’s sad…
How the hell are we going to be able to live with each other if we hate each other this much and wish death and harm upon each other?
If you hate each other that much, how about we ask you this question:
Dear angry hateful fellow Lebanese, would you like to have a new civil war and try to kill and erase all the people you hate? Your fathers tried before you and failed… and so will you. So shut up, be sensible, and learn to be polite. You cannot eliminate and erase your fellow citizen. No one can erase the other. If you start a war, no one will win. You will lose a lot of your people, they will lose a lot of theirs, the country will be destroyed once again, and everyone will lose.
In a family, brothers do argue, and they do fight. However, at the end of the day, they still have to live under the same roof, so they must learn to get along. They don’t have to love each other, they might even decide to avoid each other. At the end of day, they know that they cannot get rid of each other, so they do the sensible thing: they stop fighting, they learn to accept each other, they accept their differences, they show respect to each other, and they continue living their lives under the same roof peacefully like civilized people.
Another family member who sees the brothers fighting usually intervenes and tries to calm them down and bring them to their senses. Sometimes such family members end up getting collateral damage in the form of an insult or a shove… but they know it’s ok because they’re doing the right thing and it’s a sacrifice they’ll accept in order to make peace in the family.
Dear reader, you are a sensible person… so if you see one of your brothers or sisters spreading hate, please try to bring them to their senses to stop that nonsense. By “brothers and sisters”, I mean people who follow your same political opinions… not people with opposite opinions (because they won’t accept what you have to say).
We don’t want a new civil war. We are not savage animals. We are all humans who have the mental capacity to accept and respect another person, even if they’re different from us. Some of us just need guidance. Be the guide.
Let’s share this message and make a small positive impact.
